Old towns in “smart cities” between conservation and metamorphosis. Pending European Union guidelines

2014

In reflecting upon the role of environmental capital as represented by old towns in smart cities, the author reveals the consequences of re-plastering the facade of ancient buildings while emphasizing the resulting risk of globalization of historic districts. This is followed by a critical consideration concerning the active protection of old towns and their cultural typicality and geographical context, prerequisites for the development of specific guide-lines for the European Union. Explanation is also provided about how the restoration dynamics of the old towns are irreversibly changing the urban landscape in European cities. Strict regulations regarding the preservation of European old t…

Teaching the restoration of monuments at Palermo: the state of the art

2008

Il contributo spiega le modalità dell'insegnamento del restauro nella facoltà di Architettura di Palermo, illustrandone i contenuti anche con la preparazione di tesi di laurea The Architecture Faculty of the University of Palermo, founded in 19 5, is the oldest in Sicily; a Faculty of Architecture based in Siracusa was added in the 1990s and is dependant on the University of Catania; while in 2005 teaching began at the University Kore based in Enna, which o ers a three-year degree course in the Science of Architecture as part of its department of Fine Arts Conservation. The faculty of architecture of the University of Palermo provides a ve-year architecture course (cl 4/S) as well as anothe…

Effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability of giomer and microfilled composite resin: an in vitro comparison

2011

Objectives: The effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability and surface topography of a giomer and a microfilled composite resin was evaluated in the present in vitro study. Study design: Forty discs measuring 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were prepared from a giomer and a microfilled composite resin. Each material yielded 20 discs with completely smooth surfaces. Then a spectrophotometer was used to measure L* (lightness), a* (redness, greenness) and b* (blueness, yellowness) color coordinates of all the discs. Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel. After measuring the color coordinates once again, color changes (…

Retrospective analysis of survival rates and marginal bone loss on short implants in the mandible

2011

Objectives: Short implants have become an interesting alternative to bone augmentation in dental implantology. Design of shorter implants and longer surveillance times are a current research issue. The goal of this study was to show the survival rates of short implants below 9 mm in the partly edentulous mandibular premolar and molar regions with fixed prosthetics. Marginal vertical and 2D bone loss was evaluated additionally. Different implant designs are orientationally evaluated. Material and Methods: A total of 247 dental implants with fixed prosthetics (crowns and bridges) in the premolar and molar region of the mandible were evaluated; 47 implants were 9 mm or shorter. Patient data we…

The present work took place in the Museum of Zoology “Doderlein” of the SIMUA, University of Palermo. A restoration of skeletons …

Charm and hidden charm scalar mesons in the nuclear medium

2009

We study the renormalization of the properties of low-lying charm and hidden charm scalar mesons in a nuclear medium, concretely of the D-s0(2317) and the theoretical hidden charm state X(3700). We find that for the D-s0(2317), with negligible width at zero density, the width becomes about 100 MeV at normal nuclear-matter density, while in the case of the X(3700) the width becomes as large as 200 MeV. We discuss the origin of this new width and trace it to reactions occurring in the nucleus, while offering a guideline for future experiments testing these changes. We also show how those medium modifications will bring valuable information on the nature of the scalar resonances and the mechan…

Art Painting Testing with Terahertz Pulse and Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave

2017

Paintings of individuals or collections undergo aging over time. The work of art restorers consists of repairing these defects using techniques that respect the history of the work. Ultraviolet, infrared and visible light and X-rays are well known techniques for analyzing these defects, but Terahertz is also increasingly used. Several works have shown that it is possible to detect hidden layers and various defects via terahertz pulses. In a previous work, we have shown that it is possible to use terahertz radiation to detect defects in the context of a restoration of a painting with a speed increase compared to time domain imaging.

Immediate and flapless implant insertion and provisionalization using autogenous bone grafts in the esthetic zone: 5-year results.

2017

Objectives As the 2-year results for immediately inserted and provisionalized implants have been reported, it remained an open issue, whether the initially high success rates and the esthetic outcome remain stable for longer observation periods. Therefore, this prospective study examines the 5-year hard and soft tissue changes at implants placed in the anterior maxilla. Material and methods Meanwhile, 37 microthreaded implants were placed in 21 patients into extraction sockets with and without facial bone deficiencies by a flapless approach. Facial gaps and bony defects were grafted with autogenous bone chips. The implants were immediately provisionalized. The primary outcome parameters wer…

Le pouvoir royal (1814-1848). A la recherche du quatrième pouvoir ?

2021

This work sheds light on the representations of royal power that confronted each other until 1848 to fulfil the programme of reconciliation of the "two France" wanted by Louis XVIII. They are divided between the desire to return to the Ancien Régime and the attempt to renew the royal function. Opposed to the ultraroyalists, the supporters of this original path wished to consecrate liberal constitutionalism by resorting to an unexpected expedient, the power of the King, which had to be remodelled. As with Constant and Dunoyer, it was a question of creating a fourth power with its own essence and a new mission: to watch over the institutions. This regulating or preserving power produced a pas…
